Cory Machado, a Portuguese-American Pro Wrestler is not only taking on the challenge of fighting to end hunger in the United States with National Pro Wrestling League, he’s also aiming to bring more attention to his Grandparent’s home country to open more doors for Portuguese Pro Wrestlers.

Speaking with us Cory goes into detail about what drives him to wake up every day working harder and harder each and every day. He says, “When I do well it opens more doors for more people, when I succeed it draws attention to the incredible wealth of talent that currently wrestle in Portugal of whom deserve more opportunities to wrestle here in the United States and other places. I can’t think of failing because to me there’s so much more at stake than just a match or appearance. I’m fighting to feed families. I’m wrestling for so much more than myself. To me, when I win, we all win. I know not all people think this way but I do, it’s how I was raised. You work hard – respect where you came from – and work hard to honor those sacrifices providing for the future. That’s a mentality I’m proud of, it’s kept me humble, grateful, and hard-working. When people who love wrestling talk about wrestling, they talk about The U.S., The U.K., Mexico, India, and Japan. I want to help create a momentum that effectively changes that narrative. I want Portugal among those countries in that list and it will happen!”

We asked Cory what drew him to the world of Pro Wrestling after making a name for himself with social media and if he played any sports growing up. He explained that he worked very hard early on in his teens to cultivate his brand and justly earned the fanbase he has today. Whenever he sets his mind to something he will create a plan adjust accordingly and succeed. Cory notes that he’s a believer in study and practice how you play. He tells us that he loved sports and was always athletically inclined growing up. Playing many sports such as american football & baseball he expressed a love for staying active. Cory further gives us details about being a kid who was extremely blessed in the sense that he got to spend a lot of time with his great grandparents and most especially his great grandfather. Cory’s fondest memories of his great grandfather were all based around watching pro wrestling on T.V. “My great grandfather was born and raised in Portugal as was my grandfather and I have these amazing memories of the three of us watching wrestling. My great grandfather would be half coming out of his seat yelling at the T.V in Portuguese while shaking his fist and then in another moment would be jolting up out of the seat entirely, cheering with a huge smile and clapping his hands. Memories I’ll never forget. To be honest, I do this honoring him. It’s my chance to show him he will never be forgotten and he can live through me by me becoming a Pro Wrestler with NPWL. It in a way keeps him with me and I smile every day thinking about that possibility. It’s a proud moment getting to see my grandfather watch me wrestling which is something that brought his dad so much joy…”

In speaking with Cory we learned about his work with raising money for Breast Cancer Research to find a cure as well as his efforts to help spread awareness for Alzheimer’s. Both being topics that touch his heart knowing people who’ve battled both diseases. Cory comments, “anything I do or have done I don’t often talk about them because I feel in today’s society people do things and go places for the notoriety or for posting purposes. For me, I’ve done things to affect change because I believe in being the change and that if you give without expectations then you’re truly giving with your heart because you want to and it’s not about the likes or retweets, you know? I can’t tell you how much hate I see online these days or on the news or how many times I see people posting things instead of enjoying the moment. This shouldn’t be the representation of all millennials it’s an unfair generalization. There’s a lot of good going on in the world and I’d much rather be a part of that and leave my mark on that.”

Cory mentioned to us his plans for the future both for himself as well as wrestling and charities. All we can say is this guy has got positivity, perspective, plans, and perserverance. He’s going to be the proof that passion transcends generations. Providing hope, honoring family, and fighting for a better future – that’s the attitude that should never go out of style.
