Now On Kickstarter, A New Project To Create A Series Of Radically Diverse, Inclusive Personalized Children’s Books

July 06
20:40 2020

Cosmic Unicorns, a children’s book company focused on diversity, inclusion, and empowerment is now crowdfunding on Kickstarter. Inspired to raise awareness with customized children’s books, Cosmic Unicorns is leading a powerful movement as a publisher of children’s literature that is colorful, multi-cultural, trauma-informed, and blended.

Cosmic Unicorns, a grassroots queer and female-owned small business, has set out to create and publish content within a racial, ethnic, gender, and social justice framework that encourages personal growth. Inspired by related issues in our society, Cosmic Unicorns will create a representative selection of personalized children’s books for children from any background or in any home environment

While many personalized book sites lack representative options that promote diversity, inclusivity, and multi-cultural understanding, Cosmic Unicorns embraces the gender spectrum and the diverse populations and ethnicities among us, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, or children needing mobility devices.

“This idea came from a troubling statistics,” remarked Mandi Hawke, Chief Magic Maker at Cosmic Unicorns. “In 2018, a study by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center found there were more children’s books featuring animals and other non-human characters than all types of visible minorities combined.  Meanwhile, half of all the children’s books reviewed featured white kids. We knew a new initiative was needed to promote diversity and inclusivity in children’s literature.”

Offering a single child character, Cosmic Unicorn allows anyone to customize someone that looks like and represents their child and culture. Options include a variety of hairstyle options, skin tones, eye colors, glasses, freckles, wheelchairs, hijabs, and other inclusive choices, with gender-neutral language and androgynous play clothing or character-themed outfits, such as those of a mermaid or pirate.

To demonstrate its vision for this project, Cosmic Unicorns is launching two books, a diverse and inclusive book titled River’s Big Adventure, and a personalized children’s book titled Your Child’s Big Adventure, worldwide.

Acknowledging that every child is different and should be celebrated, Cosmic Unicorns is promoting a new generation of children’s literature. For a limited time, support this project on Kickstarter. A pledge of just $15 or more earns backers one of the first copies of River’s Big Adventure or finances the gift of one copy to an influencer. The campaign ends on July 17, 2020. Additional information on rewards is available on the Kickstarter page.

About Cosmic Unicorns

Cosmic Unicorns was founded by Mandi Hawke of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A communications major who has worked in leadership and administrative roles within the LGBTQIA+ social services arena,  Hawke, and her spouse, are both parents, mentors, and advocates for diverse families with a range of trauma backgrounds. Recognizing a lack of diversity and inclusive family messaging, and a focus on binary gender classifications, Hawke created Cosmic Unicorns to publish personalized content within a racial, ethnic, gender, and social justice framework.
